Happy Thanksgiving in Vermont

We had some good snow on the ground in some places of the Northeast this past weekend - lots of fun!

Couple of learning experiences with this igloo and its quick return to the earth, however. This was built over the course of two days. The first few rows were formed with fresh powdery snow while the top of the dome was made with wetter, denser snow that had been warming in the sun during the next day's afternoon. Although the wetter snow was far easier to pack, it was too heavy to support during a continued thaw during the third day and the ceiling eventually caved in. Another heat issue was that we used snow on southwestern side of the igloo for our blocks and when the dark grass was exposed from the thinned snow cover, the radiated heat accelerated the igloo's melting. Had we gathered snow exclusively from the north side of the igloo, the field would have remained covered, and perhaps the igloo would have lasted a bit longer.

Can't wait for some more good snow and some consistently cold weather!

Sorry to hear your igloo didn't last vtsnowman, I can relate! This January we built an 11' with fresh snow & it only froze two nights the following week.

I might also recommend trying to build your next igloo in the shade if you've the option.

Good luck on your next build!
If you're not having fun, you're not doing it right!
